What Happens on Your First Driving Lesson? A Step-by-Step Guide

Starting something completely new is always nerve-wracking. Your first driving lesson doesn't have to be. Here's exactly what to expect — from the moment your instructor arrives to the end of the session.

Before the Lesson

**Bring your provisional licence.** Your instructor is legally required to see it before you drive. The photocard is sufficient — no paper counterpart needed.

Wear comfortable shoes. Avoid thick-soled shoes, flip-flops, or heels — you want to feel the pedals clearly.

Don't drink excessive caffeine beforehand. Heightened anxiety + driving = not ideal.

When Your Instructor Arrives

Your instructor will: 1. Check your provisional licence 2. Introduce themselves and put you at ease (a good instructor does this naturally) 3. Ask about any driving experience, health issues, or anxieties you want them to know about

The Cockpit Drill

Before you move, your instructor will walk you through the **cockpit drill** — adjusting your position for safe control:

  • **Seat position** — can you press the clutch/brake fully while keeping a slight knee bend?
  • **Head restraint** — aligned with the back of your head
  • **Steering wheel** — adjusted for reach and height
  • **Mirrors** — interior and both wing mirrors set to your position
  • **Seatbelt** — fastened by both of you

In an automatic (which Drive Dojo uses), the cockpit drill is simpler — no clutch to worry about.

Moving Off for the First Time

In a **quiet residential area**, your instructor will talk you through:

  • **Preparing to move** — check mirrors, signal if needed, find your feet on pedals
  • **Moving off** — in an automatic, it really is just D + gentle accelerator
  • **Steering** — keeping a smooth, light grip, aiming for a straight line
  • **Stopping** — smooth brake application, returning to neutral (P in an automatic)

You'll repeat this several times until it starts to feel natural.

What You Won't Do on Lesson 1

Don't worry — your first lesson will NOT include: - Busy main roads (unless you specifically request it) - Roundabouts or dual carriageways - Any manoeuvres (parallel park, bay park etc.) - Any test-standard driving

Your instructor's job in lesson 1 is simply to make you feel safe and build your first layer of confidence.

After the Lesson

Your instructor will debrief you — what went well, what to focus on next time. Ask questions if you have them. There are no stupid questions in driving lessons.

Book your next lesson before you leave if you can — consistency matters early on.

Ready to Book?

Drive Dojo's first lessons are relaxed, patient, and in automatic cars — no stalling, no clutch stress.
